The Carbon Lady Dinos protected their home turf in finishing a perfect 4-0 to win the 2020 Corona Classic 3A Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Carbon County Softball Complex.

Competing against nine of the other 17 schools in the 3A competition, Carbon survived a first round scare, then waltzed through the next three games to claim the tournament crown.

“There was a lot of emotion, has you could probably imagine,” said head coach Wade Williams. “I told the girls going in that I expected to win this tournament. All of their handwork and unselfish attitudes is the reason why.”

Opening the tournament with a contest against Union on Friday, the Lady Dinos were pushed to the brink. With the game tied going into extra innings, Carbon pulled away with consistent offense to earn a 13-8 victory.

Returning to the field just moments later, Carbon overwhelmed South Summit with an offensive explosion in an eventual 21-10 win. That put the Lady Dinos in the semifinals later that evening against the North Sanpete Hawks.

Faced with heavy competition Carbon again passed with flying colors as they defeated North Sanpete 13-6. That win allowed Carbon to rest throughout Saturday and await the winner of the one-loss bracket at 3:00 p.m..

“After watching the teams play I thought there was a good chance we would get North Sanpete again,” Williams said. “They are always a really good team. But each game our defense got better and better and by the time we played them I thought we were playing our best.”

North Sanpete did earn the right for another crack at Carbon after defeating the Grand Red Devils at 12:30 p.m.. Though the Lady Hawks had built momentum, it was no use against a motivated Carbon team that took care of business once again.

Designated as the home team in the title game, the Lady Dinos shut North Sanpete down in the opening frame. In the bottom half of the inning Carbon exploded to take a monumental 9-0 lead and never looked back.

While the season ending tournament was not sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association, it does give the team’s four seniors a sense of closure after their final campaign was cut short. Brenna Tabone, Kennedy Nelson, Mollie Horsely and Kimber Bryton all ended their Carbon playing career with a championship victory.

The season ending tournament was hosted by Carbon County Recreation.
