Just north of Price, you may have noticed the construction taking place where the new Port of Entry will be located. Castle Country Radio was able to speak over the telephone with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Spokesperson, Kevin Kitchen about the project.

“This is probably one of our most visible projects at this time, and as we’ve mentioned previously to your listeners, we are building a new Port of Entry there. It’s kind of a two-phased project, the first phase is taking care of all of the things that are necessary ramps, roads and places to park the trucks and that kind of a thing, then after that is all completed, they come back in and put a new structure there,” said Kitchen. Currently, you can see the numerous trucks and equipment clearing out dirt from the shoulder areas of the project so it may seem very dusty at this time.

“But that’s going to be ongoing for a few weeks then we’ll be moving closer towards getting grade for those ramps and paving. Once we get to that stage, then there’s a possibility that we’ll have to take a lane on US-6 in order for the trucks to get in to do the paving work and make those transitions into the mainline,” stated Kitchen. The paving portion is scheduled to take place in the next 4 to 6 weeks, as weather permits.

The structure phase will be a brick and mortar building, as Kitchen explains, “This will be a permanent structure on site and this will give us some added capacity and really help out when it comes to being able to inspect those trucks and so forth. So, this is a really very nice facility, major upgrade from what we’ve seen.” The new Port of Entry will allow for traffic to flow better and will be a lot safer for other drivers on the road compared to port’s current location at the mouth of the canyon.

There is a road construction project coming up that will begin paving roads to and from Kenilworth.  “This is basically a preservation, we’re going to be going in and paving the road between Kenilworth and then coming down and splitting out there on Spring Glen Road, as well as, 157 as you hook up with US-6 there. So basically, those roads that led out to Kenilworth and where they join with US-6 are all going to get new pavement,” stated Kitchen. This project should be getting started in the next week or so. There is a strong possibility that drivers could see some delays when traveling through this area.
