Each week Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood comes in to visit the KOAL 103.9 FM News room to talk about what his department has been doing over the week and/or gives some helpful hints and insight on safety concerns for the citizens of Carbon County.

Members of the department headed to Moab this past weekend for the annual Fallen Officers Memorial Ride which honors fallen law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our state. The event brings family members and other fellow officers from around the state to show their respect and ride the Fallen Officer Trail on ATVs or UTVs.  “I want to thank the Utah Peace Officers Association for that they put on a good event down there and you know the proceeds for that go to the families of the fallen officers,” stated Wood. A portion of the profits go towards scholarships for children of fallen officers.

The weather is warming up and more time is being spent outdoors for community member. It’s always important to take safety precautions in any activity you are doing whether it’s riding ATVs or UTVs, but especially when it comes to gun safety. With several gun ranges just a stone’s throw away from town, it’s important to remember the four basics rules: one, treat all guns as if they are loaded; two, don’t point your gun at anything that you aren’t willing to destroy or pay for; third, know your target and beyond your target; and finally, keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire. “Never, never lax on those rules, the first time that you let your hair down and don’t follow the rules is when bad things happen,” stated Wood.

The Sheriff’s office along with Price City Fire Department, Carbon County EMS Command Post, Helper City Fire Department and Smokey the Bear with the Forest Service made a visit to Sally Mauro Elementary. They presented a short assembly for the students to explain what duties each agency was responsible for. Students were given the opportunity to go outside to see the fire trucks and patrol vehicles. Wood said, “We really enjoy that part of our job that was a good day and the Pinnacle Academy kindergarten kids are going to come and tour our command center, our intake building and the Sheriff’s office itself so will have little kindergarteners running around, it will be a good day.”

Several annual community events are coming up and deputies are looking forward to being out mingling with public this spring and summer. “We love to be involved with the community so you will see us, interact with us, come up, it’s a good time to have questions answered that you may have or just to get to know your local law enforcement, we love it,” stated Wood.
