Citizens that are planning to leave town for the long holiday weekend should be sure to be on their toes as the highways are said to be very busy and full of drivers traveling for Thanksgiving.

“Over the years I have noticed, this holiday especially they get a little bit careless I would say, they speed, they make bad passes,” said Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. “I use to work in Green River and have to drive highway 6. Every year, during this time of year we would stop somebody out there that was going in excess of 90 miles an hour making bad passes and we would tell them – it’s better for you to arrive at your destination than get in a crash on the way.” Travelers should do their part over the holiday weekend by obeying traffic laws, buckling up, be aware of surroundings, stay off cell phone and absolutely no drinking and driving.

There is a strong possibility that weather may play a huge factor in travel plans this holiday weekend. “Make sure you are ready for winter driving. Make sure your air pressure is good on your tires. Make sure your windshield wiper bottle is full. Make sure you have everything, jumper cables, some warm gear in case you get stranded on the side of the road,” explained Wood. Another important tip during the colder months is to try to keep the gas tank half full in case a situation arises and at least driver/passengers can stay warm till help arrives.

Wood finished by addressing the increase of traffic on the roads before and after the holiday, “Remember what the purpose is, what the goal for the holiday is, reflect on the things you are thankful for, good times with family and friends, and everyone should identify something their thankful for and count their blessings because we’re all blessed in a unique way.” Residents who see any law enforcement officials during the holiday break are encouraged to thank them for their service and sacrifice in keeping the community safe.
