The Emery Spartans punched their ticket to the quarterfinals as they defeated the Providence Hall Patriots 69-53 in the opening round of the state tournament Saturday night at Orem High School.

Zac Jorgensen finished with a career high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans in the win. Fellow junior Koby Butler also registered a double-double, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Shooting a blistering 58-percent from the field in the first half, the Spartans held a comfortable 40-28 lead at half time. Holding the Patriots scoreless for the first 3:36 of the third quarter, the lead grew to 18. Despite several miniature runs from Providence Hall, the Spartans remained in control throughout.

Senior center Hayden Bush led the Patriots with 19 points off an efficient 9-10 shooting performance from the post. Sophomore Boston Douglas finished with 15 and senior Hayden Livingston ended with 11.

Bowdie Jacobson controlled the tempo offensively for Emery ending with a game high six assists. Jacobson's ball handling ability was key throughout as Providence Hall attempted to use a half court trap to fluster the Spartans.

The win moves Emery the second round of the state tournament at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Following losses by Manti, North Sevier and San Juan, Emery is the only team from Region 15 remaining in the state tournament.

The final stage of the 2015-2016 season pits the final eight teams in a double elimination format. However, one loss eliminates a team from state championship contention. The Spartans will meet either Delta or Rockwell at 2:30 PM Thursday afternoon. The winner will advance to meet either Waterford or Summit Academy.
