Carbon County School District weekly update was with the Student Council Advisor, Miss Leela from Bruin Point Elementary. She spoke about the various Service Projects and Character the students have completed during the 2015-2016 school year.

“So the student council is made up of fourth and fifth graders, they do morning announcements, they raise and lower the flag each day, each month they do a little skit to introduce the character trait for the month and what the service project for the month is going to be, and they are in charge of those service projects and raising money for what every project we are working on,” said Miss Leela.

The various service projects are introduced at the beginning of each month, September started off the school year with a Character Trait called Stop, Walk, Talk, this was an opportunity for students to help faculty and staff when needed whether it was straightening up chairs in the classrooms, organizing books or helping in the lunchroom.

October, November and December concentrated on giving back with the Pennies by the Inch project which benefited Primary Children’s Hospital, a Food Drive for the local Food Bank and a Mitten Tree. These three service projects were based on the Character Traits of Self Awareness and Self Management.

Students returned in January to work on a Service Scavenger Hunt which was based on the monthly Character Trait of Relationship Skills. Students took a list home that had different chores or jobs to help around their home or neighborhood.

The month of February was based on the Character Trait Responsible Decision Making which allowed students to Service themselves by Setting Self/Setting Personal Goals and being accountable for them.

March was based on Social Awareness which was to show understanding and empathy by being respectful, kind and polite.

April and May will focus on all the Character Traits learned throughout the year. Students will be encouraged at the end of the school year to continue what they have learned and practice the Character Traits during the summer.

The remainder of the year will involve Carbon Animal Shelter, School Clean-up and No Grave Unadorned as their service projects.

Miss Leela finished with, “They are a fun group of kids to work with and we liked to pick projects that benefit people around us, so we just like to pick local charities that need help.”
