The Miners Memorial committee will be very busy this summer with the final dedication ceremonies set to take place during annual county celebrations. The main Miners Memorial monument was recognized in Price last September during Labor Day and it’s now time for the four satellite monuments to be unveiled this summer.

Frank Markosek, one of the committee chairs said, “We’re working on the last four dedications that we have done for the Miners Memorial. We’ve dedicated the Miners Memorial for the names in Carbon County and we recently, two weeks ago dedicated the monument for the miners in Castle Dale.” The ceremony in Castle Dale was in conjunction with the Emery County Fair festivities.

Markosek and his friend Dennis Ardohain, both retired coal miners, spent many hours over morning coffee talking about the men who gave the ultimate sacrifice by working in the coal mines and knew that something needed to be done to memorialize these fellow brothers and their families. “Our purpose was to get this word out to respect these coal miners for what they have done over the years, to put Carbon and Emery County on the map,” said Markosek. With the help from a 28-member committee they were able to round up donations and host various fundraising events to fund all of the monuments in both Carbon and Emery counties.

A ceremony for one of the satellite monuments will take place on Friday, July 1 at 7:00 pm in Scofield to kick off Pleasant Valley Days, the monument is located inside the park area. “The next dedication will take place in East Carbon on July 8 at 1:00 pm in the afternoon and where its located at is right where Miner’s Trading Post, it’s just a little bit east of the Miner’s Trading Post there is a little park there and that’s where it will be dedicated at,” said Markosek. East Carbon dedication is during their annual Community Days celebration.

The final dedications will take place in Huntington and in Helper during the Helper Arts Festival. The date and time for both events will be released at a later date.

Markosek finished with, “We just hope to have everybody come out and support these deals. We’ve had great support putting this all together, real positive from all the communities Emery County, Carbon County. We would just like to have your support and come out see the finalization of these memorials we’ve been putting up.”
