The Helper American Legion baseball team’s season came to a close Tuesday morning, as they lost for the second consecutive day at the state championship tournament in Layton.

Entering the tournament a No. 1 seed following an 11-1 league record, Helper was upset by Grantsville 5-0 in the opening game Monday night. Forced into a win-or-go-home contest with Layton Tuesday morning, Helper once again came out on the losing end, this time 2-1.

Mitch Olson was charged with the loss in the first game of the tournament as Helper’s provided no run support for a solid outing. The offense remained stale in the second game as Cole Fossat pitched a complete game in the one-run loss.

2016 marked the return of Helper to the legion ranks after taking 2015 off. The legion squad won the state championship in both 2014 and 2013.

The state tournament will continue throughout the week, and a champion will be crowned Friday afternoon in Layton.
