Price City International Days is excited to help the United Way of Eastern Utah with their Back Pack Program by allowing them to host a Run with Scissors 5K walk/run on Saturday, July 30 at 7:30 am. The cost to participate is $15.00 per person which includes a t-shirt or $25.00 per family which does not include a t-shirt. Event t-shirts can be purchased for $8.00 each.

Terry Willis, United Way Board Member spoke about the Back Pack Program, “The program is a connection with school supplies and we have a lot of youth and families in our area that really struggle with the school year when it begins. They got school clothes to buy, fees on top of all the supplies that they need and it puts quite a strain on some families to put that all together.” The program helps children/students in both the Carbon and Emery counties.

“Carol Wright the Director of United Way has been working with Adobe and they have filled 20 plus back packs, up at Adobe and donated them all to the Carbon County/Emery County area and are a great supporter of our United Way and want to get more involved with things that they can do in this area, as well as what they do already in the Lehi area,” stated Willis. United Way has also been working with the Children’s Justice Center to help fill back packs as they have done a similar program in years past.

Items can range from loose leaf paper, binders, pencils, scissors, markers, crayons. Willis explains further, “Just think about what do you need? What is on your list for your kids? It runs the whole age range of what kids need not just pre-schoolers or elementary school kids but junior high school kids also have quite a list of school supplies. So as you’re out there, school shopping just pick up an extra one or two of something and bring it. Participants in the 5K can bring their donations of school supplies with them on the morning of the race as there will be drop off boxes at the registration table and any additional donations of school supplies will be greatly appreciated.

“You know it may not break a family to have to buy all those school supplies but if you’re helping them out a little bit they may be able to use that money to do a little bit something different, maybe but a little bit nicer pair of shoes that will last a little longer into the school year or something along that lines so that kind of help goes along way,” stated Willis.

Participants are urged to register in advance with Carbon County Recreation either online or by calling their office at 636-3702. If you are unable to participate in the 5K but would like to make a donation to the Back Pack Program, you can drop your items off at the United Way office located at 67 East Main Street.
