Carbon County’s Office of Economic Development will be hosting an informational and educational meeting on Brownfields to be held on Tuesday, August 9 at 9:00 am till 12:00 pm in the Commission Chamber located 751 East 100 North in Price.

Guest speakers will be Mark Walker with Kansas State University and Bill Rees with Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Both men will educate as well as answer questions from the community regarding Brownfields , plus discuss different options for property owners and the county.

A brownfield is a former industrial or commercial site where future uses is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination. A “brownfield site” means real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. For example, an old coal loadout, a former gas station, an old rail yard and abandoned junk yard. Any property where soil, water and air contamination has caused a variety of land use activities.

The cleanup and reinvesting of these properties can increase local tax bases, facilitate job growth, utilize existing structures, take development pressures off an undeveloped, open land, and could both improve and protect the environment.
