Students at Carbon High School are getting back into the swing of things after a long summer break. Student Government has been busy filling up their calendar with activities for the student body to enjoy.

The students are currently enjoying Rush Week at the school which is a great opportunity for new incoming students to find out about the fun clubs available for the school year.  “This is a time for clubs and advisors to get their word out about their specific clubs and organizations and to get people to join their clubs for the year,” stated Student Government Advisor Troy Chilcott. Students can learn teamwork, leadership skills, social development by being involved in extracurricular activities.

Rush Week was approached differently this year as Chilcott explains, “This year we are trying something new where we are doing like a speed dating thing where they go around and they’re going to talk to each club for about five minutes just to kind of see which one they would be interested in joining.”  Extracurricular activities can give students a purpose for attending school and provide them with an incentive for good academic performance during the school year.

Currently, the Carbon Dinos are underway with the volleyball and football season which means Homecoming is right around the corner. Student Body President, Colton Cave spoke about the details and what they hope to accomplish this year, “Carbon High to us is more than just a school it’s kind of like a tradition for our community. We want everyone that has gone to Carbon or live in Carbon County to come out and participate in our events because its going to be a lot of fun.” Homecoming week is slated for September 12 through September 16 and will be playing against their rivals from the south the Emery High Spartans.

Activities include Monday school pictures, Tuesday will be a bomb fire sponsored by  Tony Basso, Wednesday will be the annual carnival for local children to participate in, Thursday will be the powder puff game between the junior girls against the senior girls. “Friday we will have our pep rally at 10:00 am, parade at 1:00 pm, there will be a tailgate party sponsored by ETV10 right before the football game and then we will have fireworks after the football game,” stated Cave.
