The Emery Lady Spartans clinched a playoff berth for the second time in the program’s two year history with a 4-1 victory over North Sevier Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Aubrey Justice, Chloe Sermon, Jennifer Funk and Morgan Hurdsman all scored one goal for Emery in the win, which also ended a three game losing skid. Holding a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, the Lady Spartans dominated the final stanza adding two more scores.

Needing one win, or a North Sevier loss in the final two games to advance to the postseason, the Lady Spartans took matters into their own hands. The win also eliminates North Sevier, meaning Emery, Gunnison, Manti and Grand will represent Region 15 at the state tournament.

While a playoff spot has been sealed the Lady Spartans have one more region contest remaining on Thursday when they welcome in Gunnison; which will have an impact on seeding.

Currently tied with Gunnison for third place in the league, the winner will be guaranteed the three seed, while the loser will drop to the fourth seed. If the Lady Spartans get the win and Grand suffers a loss to North Sevier, Emery would have a chance to improve to the No. 2 seed.

Thursday’s regular-season finale will take place in Castle Dale, giving the local area one last opportunity to see the team play. The end of the season contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM and all tie-breakers regarding the region standings will be decided shortly after.
