The Carbon Dinos climbed two spots in the second and final day of the 3A state championship tournament for a fifth place finish at the Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway Thursday morning.

Shooting a 315 team score after day one the Dinos were outside of the top by three strokes. The Dinos improved their second day score by nine strokes to end with a 621, climbing to fifth place for the second consecutive season.

Park City easily claimed the state championship as they ended with a team score of 569, 42 strokes better than second place Logan. Pine View ended one stroke behind Logan in third place and Ridgeline finished fourth with a final total of 619.

Posting an 86 in the first round on Wednesday, Joey Penovich registered the low round of the tournament for the Dinos with a 73 on Thursday. Ryker Smith shot a 75 on both days to record the low total score for the Dinos at 15. Ryan Gagon shot a 78 and 77 for the second team low score of 155. Kayden Alderson ended with a 158.

Smith’s 150 put him just outside the top 10 at No. 11 individually for the tournament. Missing the top 10 by only one stroke, Smith was 10 shots off of the winner Michael Walters from Juan Diego who won a sudden death play against Pine View’s Noah Schone and Park City’s Zane Schemmer.

The 2016 campaign was a successful one for the Dinos who finished unbeaten in Region 12 play, claiming the league title without a single blemish. Following the regular season the team reclaimed the traveling trophy by winning the Eastern Utah Cup against Union and Uintah.
