The Carbon Caring for Kids non-profit organization is busy preparing for the upcoming Spring Break for schools in the Carbon School District, as well as for Pinnacle Schools. The organization helps school children in the community that for some reason or another are not getting food to eat consistently when they are not in school.  Extended time off from school, such as the upcoming spring break brings concerns to the organization’s founders, Marcy Loveless and Tiffany Noyes.

“We are dealing with Randi Leonard, who is our liaison for the school district and this is all how it came about – was by talking to her; lots of social workers have to use their own money, out of their own pocket to just give these kids a couple of granola bars for the weekend. She was really frustrated. It’s heartbreaking to see this and they deal with these kids on a daily basis,”
stated Loveless. The children are identified through the help of the administration in the schools. The names of the children are anonymous to the organizers; they just get a count of food kits needed for the weekend at each of the schools.

“There are lots of kids that just get breakfast and lunch at school, they don’t get anything all weekend for various reasons,” stated Loveless. The spring break holiday is one of the lengthy breaks for children, the Carbon School District will be out for five days and Pinnacle Schools for nine days. This is why the organization is reaching out to members of the community, as well as businesses for assistance.

“Well we try to offer a variety of ways to volunteer because every little bit helps. You can sponsor a kit for the weekend, its costs $10.00 for a kit for the weekend. As far as the big break, for Easter break, we have a list of items. So, we stocked things like a full loaf of bread, full jar of peanut butter, full jar of jelly, things like that. So even one to two items from every person like that really adds up and makes a difference for us,” stated Noyes. Food items wanted are fruit cups, individual bags of carrots/celery or 4-5 big bags, apples/oranges, Chef Boyardee cups, tuna/cracker boxes, loaves of bread, granola bars, peanut butter and jelly. Items can be dropped off at one of the following locations Loveless Ash Co., Rocky Mountain Home Health, Jake Mellor Financial, Tougher Gym and/or Loveless’s home located at 1551 West 360 North in Price.

The organization has come a long ways since the beginning of the school year, they now have a website available for individuals that would like to learn more about Carbon Caring for Kids program. “So, the difference between the Facebook page and the website is that the website gives people a place to go and look at food we put in the kits every week, kind of get a basis of our story and just kind of an overview. Because the Facebook page is always being updated and changed every day and every week based on our needs,” said Noyes. The organization is coordinated through 100 percent of volunteerism, whether it’s through gathering items at drop off locations, shopping, putting the kits together and/or making deliveries to each of the schools.
