Hazardous Materials Responders were dispatched to the on-ramp of US Highway 6 and the Spring Glen turnoff the morning of Sunday, April 9 at 9:50 am. The reporting party was Carbon County Deputy Hreinson, he reported he had stopped and discarded debris that was in the middle of the road, after which he experienced concerning symptoms and required medical attention. He described his symptoms as respiratory distress, burning sensation and tingling in the extremities. Responding crews did initial assessments, upon which it was determined additional resources would be needed. Justin Needles, Carbon County Emergency Manager, called the Utah 85th Civil Support Team (CST), whom were deployed out of state. It was determined that mutual aid would be necessary, the Idaho CST was contacted and began working in conjunction with the Carbon County HazMat Team as well as the Utah Fire Marchal’s Office.

The contaminated object has been identified to be a core casing containing residual Cholobenzalmalononitrile (CS Gas) the main component in tear gas. The casing likely fell off a traveling vehicle on US 6, the carrier has not been determined. All responders have been cleared and the contaminated object was transported by the Utah Fire Marchal’s Office.
