The Sundance Trio, three faculty-colleagues at Brigham Young University’s School of Music, will be in concert at USU Eastern’s Central Instructional Building at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26.
Performing together throughout the United States and the United Kingdom at colleges, chamber music series and conferences, the trio performs music written for oboe, bassoon and piano.
Geralyn Giovannetti, Christian Smith and Jed Moss formed The Sundance Trio in 2005 and released their debut CD recording on the Centaur Records label. They have since recorded two additional CDs.
Giovannetti is a professor of oboe at BYU and a member of the faculty ensemble, Orpheus Wind Quintet. Touring through U.S., Canada, Europe, Mexico and Brazil, she has been a resident artist at the Banff Center School of Fine Arts and principal oboe of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Chamber Orchestra. She has performed with the Utah Symphony and the Utah Chamber Orchestra plus been a guest artist and faculty member at the Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy.
Smith is a professor of bassoon at BYU. An active orchestral musician, Smith played with the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, Ballet West Orchestra, Toledo Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Flint (Michigan) Symphony, Michigan Chamber Players, Utah Chamber Artists, Color of the Boraque and the Canyon Winds Woodwind Quintet. He is also a studio musician recording under the Cantaur, Telarc, Biddulph, Prima, Shadow Mountain and Mormon Tabernacle Choir record labels as well as in film and television scores.
Moss is a prolific performer who appeared on the Columbia Artists’ Community concert series, the Utah Arts Council Performing Arts Tour, the Mendelssohn Society of Chicago series, the Nova Concert series, the Canyonlands New Music series, the Abravanel Distinguished Visiting Composers series and the Contemporary Music Consortium of Utah. He toured Austria and Germany as a soloist with Utah’s Repertory Dance Theatre. He has soloed with orchestras in Idaho, Utah, Texas, California, Washington DC and Montevideo, Uruguay.
The media gives the trio raving reviews. “They are truly a magnificent ensemble. Each artist is a talented and skillful musician, and since they have performed together so often, their ensemble playing is a good as it gets,” according to a review in the IDRS Journal.
The American Record Guide wrote, “Each musician brings understanding of the works and performs with a particular sensitivity suited to the other performers” and “They are exceptionally talented musicians who seem to have broken through the mere performance of music into the world of thoughtful artistry and craft. This is the type of album you’ll want to play over and over.”
Utah newspaper, the Salt Lake Tribune wrote, “The ensemble play is also fabulous. It’s a remarkable collaborative effort by three-like-minded musicians who are equals in musicality and technical astuteness. This is a very fine album, both in the performances and in its conception.”
The Sundance Trio will be on USU Eastern’s campus all day on April 26. They will work with Eastern students at 12:30 p.m., perform a master class at 4 p.m. and end with a free community concert at 6 p.m. For additional information contact Larry Martin at larry.martin@usu.edu.
