Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood stopped in for his weekly update to discuss recent search and rescue calls, as well as, the annual derby fundraiser that help fund the volunteer basis Carbon County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team.

First off, the outdoor enthusiasts have been taking full advantage of shed horn hunting in the backcountry since the beginning of the month, which has been great since the statewide band was pushed back a few months. However, it has also kept the search and rescue team busy on a few calls to assist individuals that have gotten trapped in snow drifts. “This time of year, it’s hard because the snow will be frozen; it melts in the day, freezes at night. If it’s frozen you might be able to drive over a snow drift to get into an area, but then coming back out at the end of the day it’s melted and you can’t get back out,” explained Wood. Be prepared in the backcountry by wearing warm clothing, have plenty of water and food, flashlights and plenty of fuel in your vehicle in case you do get stranded. The Search and Rescue team can rescue individuals but cannot retrieve their vehicles.

Making state news this weekend was a lady jumping into a stream to rescue her dogs, and unfortunately the incident did not end well. If your dog enters the streams and/or rivers don’t’ worry they will be able to get back out on their own. “You jump in that water, it’s coming from right out of the snow, it’s just above freezing itself, it just over comes you so fast,” said Wood. Streams and/or rivers are much stronger and faster than people may think.

The Sheriff’s Department has been busy organizing the annual fundraiser for the Search and Rescue team that is held every year. “Derby is going to be August 12; we should have the rules finalized today to get them out for anyone who wants to build cars. There is a discount if you register early and you can register at Tire King,” said Wood. Individuals can stop by Tire King located at 535 East Main Street in Price to pick up a copy of rules.

Again, this is the only fundraising event that is held every year to help with the expenses that the Search and Rescue Team incur. “Should be a good time to come out and support the search and rescue and enjoy time with friends and family and watch us smash some cars,” said Wood. The Search and Rescue will meet each month up until the derby to make sure that this year’s show will be the very best for spectators.
