Seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled the Emery Lady Spartans past the Gunnison Bulldogs 15-12 Friday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Bailey Huggard hit three home runs and accumulated seven RBI as the Lady Spartans handed Gunnison their first region loss of the season. Jayla Weston belted a solo home run, while Morgan Donaldson and Regan Rassmusen recorded multiple hits on their way to two RBI a piece.

Trailing 9-4 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Emery scored four runs to chip the deficit to one. The offense exploded in the sixth to take a four run lead, which carried through the end of an exciting seventh inning.

Huggard shared pitching duties with Braileigh Clark as the two managed to keep Gunnison’s run support to a minimum in four of the seven innings. Together the two recorded eight strikeouts and allowed 11 hits.

Friday’s win moves Emery to 5-4 in region play, which is good enough for sole possession of third place. The team will have one more league contest on Friday against the San Juan Broncos in Castle Dale.

While the Lady Spartans have only more region game, two non-division tilts will take place before the state tournament. Emery will play host to Carbon on Wednesday, and wrap up the regular season with an exhibition against Juab on Monday, April 8.
