It’s always a treat when Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood stops into Castle Country Radio Stations to give his weekly update. As always, he shared some very informative information on preparing for the upcoming flood season, as well as, reminding folks about the annual Search and Rescue Demolition Derby.

“We’re coming into that flood season again and now is the time to start preparing your property. If you have areas last year that were flooded or damaged or areas that needed to be worked on, now is the time to make sure we are getting on top of that because it looks like the weather pattern is going to be similar to last year,” stated Wood. Historically, Carbon County is known for some major rainstorms that have resulted in flooding due to the dramatic shifts in the weather, many residents have seen firsthand; especially in areas of Spring Glen, Helper and Carbonville.

“Get ready now and the sand bags will be available and everything. I saw houses last year that people had made minor improvements on that made big dividends. Check your culverts, check your slopes, make sure that you don’t have any land sloping towards your window wells, all that slopes away,” stresses Wood. It’s a wise choice for residents to take preventative measures now instead of waiting the last minute when damage has already been done to their property. If residents are in need of sandbags, they are readily available at the Carbon County Road Shed on Airport Road.

It’s just less than a month away till the annual Search and Rescue Demolition Derby event planned for Saturday, August 12 at the Carbon County Fairgrounds Event Center.  Members of the Search and Rescue team are on a volunteer basis and donate their personal time to aid people who are in distress or imminent danger. The team relies on the proceeds each year that are  made from the derby to contribute towards their expenses. “The Search and Rescue folks will be out at the community event, we’ll have a booth at International Days and I think they’re even going to sell some cotton candy and fun things. But you’ll be able to buy your raffle tickets, your early gate tickets, we’ll have a count of how many cars are signed-up at that point,” said Wood. The Search and Rescue Team has built two cars to enter in the derby and two lucky individuals will have a chance to get behind the wheel to compete in the competition; winners will be determined through an opportunity drawing.

As of today, there are currently 28 cars signed up to compete. Wood added, “It’s not too late, you can still put a car in, if you want to do it. That’s why we went with that 80s newer chain and bang class, it’s pretty easy to build a car, two weekends and you can have a car ready to go and if you’re really good, one week.” Individuals who would like to register or have questions about the derby can stop by Tire King located at 535 East Main Street in Price.
