When a young teen driver is able to become a licensed driver can raise concerns about their safety. Sheriff Jeff Wood used his weekly update to remind the county’s young drivers about some very important safety tips to practice when getting behind the wheel.

“Always focus on what you’re doing. If you’re driving, focus on driving,” said Wood. “Keep 100 percent of your attention on driving and don’t use your cell phone or any other electronic devices and slow down. The faster you’re going the shorter of your reaction time is if you see a problem.”  Teens should always be aware of their surroundings, especially when it comes to other drivers; expect the unexpected. Drivers should also make any adjustments to their mirrors, seats, stirring wheel before ever leaving the driveway.

There are some very important tips to remember if your teen encounters a car accident. “First make sure that no one in the car is injured, then check the occupants of the other car that was involved, make sure that everyone is ok. Then make sure that you stay at the scene, call the police immediately, if it’s an injury accident call 9-1-1,” said Wood. Drivers should exchange insurance information and get contact information of any witnesses and never get into a conformation with the other driver. Once you have met with the police, exchange information, call your insurance company to file a claim, they will contact the other insurance company. Your insurance company will then advise you as to what the next step will be regarding your claim.

Beginning this year, vehicle owners will not be required to obtain a safety inspection. “Stay on top of maintenance of your vehicle. Fix the little problems with your car, don’t let one little problem turn into ten little problems, it will turn into a major problem. You know it’s just wise, it will save you money in the long run truthfully,” stated Wood. Ignoring issues of your vehicle not only puts the driver in danger but other drivers as well.

Parents should always set a good example for their young driver by driving safe, wearing seatbelts and avoid distractions. Keep the lines of communication open with your teen drivers by frequently reminding them of safety tips before allowing them to hit the road.
