kiosk

Over the last week the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has completed some upgrades to the jail pods by installing a brand-new kiosk system. This type of technology will enable inmates to receive a wide array of services that are required for inmates.

“The way this works for the county is the company that provides the kiosk doesn’t charge us anything, they take a percentage of the money generated by the kiosks. It actually generates money for the county, because everything you do there, costs money to the inmate,” stated Sheriff Jeff Wood. “We do everything from commissary, to inmate visiting – you can communicate via email, via text or you can actually skype in to talk to people.” This makes it easier for inmates to visit with family and friends and meet with their legal counsel. The kiosks are only allowed to be used during certain hours, from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and then again at 5:00 pm till 9:00 pm.

Not only does the kiosk offer communication to the outside world, but it will allow for inmates to file medical requests, inmate request, grievances, order commissary and access to the law library. “Although they’re inmates and they’ve broken the law and they’re incarcerated, they’re still human beings as well. So, we have to take care of them accordingly and treat them like they are people and they earn the right to do certain things in there,” stated Wood. The new system will make it easier for family and friends to put money on an inmate’s account without having to bring a money order to the jail. There has been a kiosk placed in the lobby at the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office for this reason.
