Emery County Sheriff’s Office held a mock lockdown/evacuation drill on February 13 at Huntington Elementary. This type of exercise is organized through the ECSO Detective Division for every campus within the Emery School District.

Prior to each of the lockdown/evacuation drills, ECSO personnel take time to visit with students and faculty at each of the schools to carefully described what can be expected during the training exercise. Although, there was no actual emergency, officers stressed the importance in taking the mock drill very serious. They also explained that with the nationwide trend of school violence, these exercises are vital to the safety of all the students and members of the faculty if something were to really happen.

One important factor about conducting the mock drill is it can be a learning tool for both the school and law enforcement officials. It can aid in determining if there needs to be any adjustments and/or improvements to the current safety plan.

The mock lockdown/evacuation would not have been possible without participation from the various law enforcement agencies. ECSO would like to extend their appreciation to Utah Highway Patrol and Adult Probation and Parole for their continued support to the Emery School District.
