The Carbon County Sheriff Weekly update is a great way for Sheriff Jeff Wood to get important information out to the public. This week he discussed safety tips for the changing conditions out in the backwoods and shared his experience in meeting with Senate hopeful Mitt Romney.

“Even though we haven’t had a lot of snow, we still have an avalanche risk. Because there is old snow, with new snow on top of it and that makes a risk for an avalanche,” said Wood. “You should if you’re going to be in the backcountry to be prepared for cold weather – if you had to be stuck and stranded or ran out of gas or broke down, whatever could happen.” Other important factors to remember is to be sure to always share your route/destination with family and friends, take plenty of water and food, means to build a fire and know areas where you have cell phone service. If individuals find themselves in trouble call 911 immediately, it is most likely the Carbon County Search and Rescue team will be instantly notified of the situation. The team is readily available at any given moment and are highly trained for any scenario they face.

On Saturday, Senate hopeful Mitt Romney took time from the campaign trail to make a stop in Price to meet with some of our local elected officials. “Some of the questions he asked me were about opioid addiction and what our community is doing to address that. He was kind of impressed with some of the things that we are doing and also our philosophies on school security and he was happy with that as well. It was kind of nice to get an opportunity to get to meet with him,” explained Wood. The local gathering of elected officials proved to be a productive meeting with Romney, who is campaigning for Utah’s Senate seat that Orrin Hatch plans to vacate in 2019.
