Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to get outdoors, enjoy time with family and friends. Whether you are traveling on the highways or heading to the hills for the first camping trip of the year it’s important to keep some safety tips in mind.

“The holiday travelers are going to be on the highways. The highways are going to be jammed with ATVs, camp trailers, and all kinds of equipment, so careful out on the highway,” said Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. “I know Moab is getting jammed pack with their events going on down there but our deserts will be full as well.” Individuals and families can have a joyous holiday and make many wonderful memories if they keep simple safety tips in mind.

Hitting the trails in off-highway vehicles can be lots of fun, but it can also can create some hazardous situations. “If you’re riding ATVs and UTVs ride at 80 percent of your ability, that way you don’t get in over your head and don’t try to do things that you don’t fill comfortable doing,” stated Sheriff Wood. Always ride within the machine’s capabilities and make sure that the OHV is a good fit so that the driver is in control at all times.

Remember that anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet; youth 8 to 15 years of age must possess an OHV education certificate before operating an OHV on public land. Be alert to oncoming traffic as you ride on the right side of the road and in a single file, especially on blind curves or crest of hills. “Of course, we all know that alcohol and machines never mix. So, if you are partaking in the spirits, stay in camp. Leave the machines alone until you are able and sober to drive,” said Sheriff Wood. Other common causes of injuries are people not wearing their seatbelts while riding UTVs. Generally, these types of machines are structured with a roll cage to hold up in case of a roll over, especially if the drivers and passengers have their seatbelts on if a crash occurs.

The Carbon County and Emery County Sheriff’s Office will have deputies patrolling during the holiday weekend on both the highways and backroads.
