This week’s Carbon School District update shines the spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary. Principal Blake Allen was able to take some time from his busy schedule to speak with Castle Country Radio about what is taking place at the school and like most of the schools in the district it’s main focus is getting students to read.

“We are putting students on to their own reading level and having them read at that. Which means that some students are not reading on, if we have a fifth grade student – they’re not reading on a fifth grade level, they’re reading maybe on a fourth, maybe on a third, but putting them in books that are on their level that they’re reading at the time helps them to improve or increase their reading level quickly,” explained Principal Allen. There is a wide array of level books available throughout the school’s grades and educators are pushing students to read as often as they can.

This is the first year that Principal Allen has been in an administrative position and he’s looking forward to working with the students and faculty. “I’ve actually taught first grade and fifth grade, so last year I was a fifth grade teacher at Castle Heights and jumped right into this gig was chosen to be principal at Sally Mauro which is an amazing honor and it’s been awesome, this first start of the year, it’s been awesome, it’s different than teaching,” stated Principal Allen. He recently had to be shrunk wrapped to the flag pole after a friendly competition was held between a group of students, although his group won the contest. He said it was all in the name of motivating the students to improve academically.

There will be a meeting regarding the upcoming Carbon School District Bond on October 8 at 3:00 pm and community members are invited to attend. “We will have a district member there to answer any questions anyone has as well as to go over the bond, just for information,” said Principal Allen. This is an important community gathering to learn and understand the upcoming bond.
