A back-and-forth battle ended with Emery on the wrong side of the scoreboard as Grand picked up an exciting five-set victory over the Lady Spartans Tuesday night in Castle Dale.

The fifth and final set came down to the wire as the Red Devils earned a 17-15 win to secure the highly competitive league contest. The two teams exchanged blows throughout the entertaining night of volleyball.

After winning the first set 25-20, Emery dropped the next two 25-22 and 25-17. With their backs against the ropes the Lady Spartans forced the fifth set with a 27-25 win.

Senior Kaejha Johnson led Emery in the setback with a team best 10 kills. Junior Madisyn Childs with eight and Abby Morris finished with seven as all three girls played five sets.

Shayleigh Hrienson joined Childs with four service aces. Childs also ended with a team high blocks.

Tuesday’s loss moves Emery to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 12 play. The Lady Spartans will now look to get back on track with a road contest against Carbon on Thursday.

Thursday’s league game will be the first of three straight on the road for Emery. Next week the team will travel to both Millard and Richfield. The next home contest is set for Thursday, Sept. 17.
