The USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum has re-opened their doors since their closure in March. The doors opened to the public on August 31 and there are some conditions that must be followed in order to visit the museum.

“I’ll start with some of the things you might not see or might not notice as much, various things like you see at most retail stores today is the plexi-barriers separating gift shop clerks and admission clerks from the visitors. We also have a new sort of system of sanitization throughout the day where our custodian is sanitizing common touch surfaces like banisters, railings, elevator buttons, three times a day,” said Museum Director and Curator of Archaeology, Dr. Tim Riley. These cleaning procedures are to keep visitors and museum workers safe.

A big change that visitors will notice is that face coverings will be required when you visit the museum. “Based on Governor Gary Herbert’s Executive Order, and also President Cockett, who is the President of the USU Systems policy, masks will be required at least through the end of 2020 to enter the museum,” said Dr. Riley. If you do not have a mask the museum will provide one to you.

Also, there will be directional signage throughout the museum to keep with the social distancing rule. “We’ll also be asking people to social distance. As you might expect stay with your group and in doing so, we’ve added a bunch of signage and floor markers around the museum. They include signs reminding you to stay six feet apart from people that you are not there visiting with,” explained Dr. Riley. By installing directional signage, it has helped the museum tell the prehistoric story in a timeline form which is something that they have thought about doing in the past.

Visitation will be capped at 60 visitors. Walk-in visitors will be welcomed if the museum is not at capacity. However, the museum recommends that guests reserve a time slot by completing the online form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeh0OzDrJDNDiyxH4vyxTx533rjrMgMd0Zedtjd4rWufgGqmg/viewform

If you have any questions about the new changes to visitation please contact the museum at (435) 637-5060 or visit their Facebook page.
