Despite sophomore Bode Salas tying for the low score of the competition, the Carbon Dinos finished third overall Tuesday afternoon at the Region 12 competition at the Moab Golf Club.

Richfield extended their lead at the top of the region standings with a first place score of 346. Grand ended just behind in second at 349, topping Carbon’s 357. South Sevier ended in fourth, followed by Emery and San Juan.

“I don’t know what it was, but everyone got off to a little bit of a slow start,” said coach Robbie Etzel. “I think Bode took a nine on his first hole, so we really couldn’t catch a break. I don’t think the Moab heat helped, but we definitely had our fair share of struggles.”

Salas once again the led the Dinos as he tied for first overall with a 79. Grand’s Wyatt Toney also shot a 79 on the final individual leaderboard.

Daron Garner and Brandon Scovill delivered the second and third scores for Carbon as both ended with a 92. Kyler Clark was the fourth score as he ended with a 94.

“I talked with my boys on the ride home yesterday and I mentioned to them that we are spoiled at Carbon with beautifully manicured fairways,” Etzel said. “When you travel to Monticello, Moab or Millsite, you should hit long irons off the tee. Our boys struggle with having to lay up on holes that are still 400 yards.”

Tuesday’s result keeps Carbon second in the Region 12 overall standings, well ahead of third-place Grand. With only two meets remaining in the regular season, Carbon trails Richfield by 37-strokes overall.

Next the Dinos will travel to Millsite, the home course of the Emery Spartans, on Thursday, Sept. 24. The regular season will then come to an end on Monday, Sept. 28 at Round Valley.
