The Carbon Lady Dinos began their quest for a third straight state championship with a dominating performance in the season opener Tuesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant.

Competing against North Sanpete in the first meet of the season, Carbon was dominate from beginning to end, winning nine of the 11 girl’s events throughout the meet. Accumulating 150 points, the Lady Dinos easily defeated North Sanpete, who ended with 66.

The Carbon boy’s team finished second overall as they logged 79 points, falling to North Sanpete’s 117. South Sevier also entered the competition, but managed just 36 points.

The Lady Dinos started the meet off with a bang as Nicole Swasey, Tyrca Jaramillo, Sofia Crompton and Haylie Powell dominated the 200 yard medley relay with a first place finish and time of 2:10.47.

Jaramillo’s day was just beginning as she claimed four first place finishes in all four competing events. Edging her teammate Swasey in both the 200 yard and 500 yard free, Jaramillo joined Swasey, Thalyn Lyman and Alyssa Chamberlain for a win in the 400 yard free relay.

Chamberlain added two more top finishes to her day as she won the 100 yard backstroke and joined Crompton, Lyman and Powell in the 200 yard free relay for a win. Powell also scored the top spot in the 100 yard free.

Lyman also took home the top spot in the 50 yard free as she completed the race in 28.81, just ahead of teammate Powell’s time of 28.96. Sofia Crompton was third in the event, giving Carbon the top three spots.

Logan Odendahl ended first in the 100 yard breaststroke, topping teammate Ellie Hanson with a time of 1:27.22. Carbon’s Taylor Secor was third to give Carbon the top three spots.

Gabe Ibanez led the Carbon boy’s team with wins each of the four events he competed. Individually Ibanez won both the 100 yard fly and 200 yard free.

Ibanez later joined Camden Chamberlain, Boyd Bradford and Spencer Tullis for wins in both the 200 yard free relay and 400 yard free relay.

With the opening meet now in the books Carbon will shift its focus to the Richfield Invitational this Saturday.
