Utah Governor Gary Herbert declared a new state of emergency Sunday evening, implementing a statewide mask mandate and a hold on all school extracurricular activities, including athletics.

While Governor Herbert announced that the UHSAA High School Football Championships could continue with new guidelines, the announcement puts a hold on all sports, including basketball, swimming and wrestling. Following the announcement from the Governor on Sunday night, the UHSAA released the following statement:

“The UHSAA is also aware of (Sunday) evening’s State Health Order from Governor Herbert. Association staff will work with the Governor’s Office and the State Health Department to understand the unique impacts to UHSAA activities, including the conclusion of the UHSAA State Football Championships and UHSAA winter activities.

The UHSAA will communicate with member schools as soon as information is available on the protocols and procedures moving forward. The safety of students and Utah communities will continue to be paramount to the Association and its member high schools.

For the purpose of winter sports, all winter sport activities and practices will be suspended until at least November 23. This includes tryouts for boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ wrestling and girls’ wrestling.”
