This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary where Principal, Connie Todachinnie took time to speak over the telephone about the school’s Penny Drive & Read-a-thon.

The community generally hosts a fundraiser for the school during the city’s summer festival but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, that event was canceled this year. So the school developed a Penny Drive event for students to help raise money for various activities the school hosts during the year. “We decided that we were going to have Penny Drive, and this was headed up by a parent. We just wanted to see how much change we were able to collect and we were very shocked. Our goal was $300.00 and with tons of help from the community earned a little over $1,500.00,” said Principal Todachinnie. For Halloween each student got a little goodie bag of treats to enjoy and the same will be done for the Christmas holiday.

The school is preparing for a Read-a-thon for the entire school to participate in. They track the school’s progress on a bulletin board in the cafeteria. Each student is urged to read at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. At the end of the month students who meet their monthly goal are eligible for fun prizes. “Then in December, we will have our reading celebration. So it will be a Read-a-thon, Polar Express / hot chocolate and cookies celebration for Christmas. But what it really will be for celebrating the kids and all of the reading,” said Principal Todachinnie. The students reading levels are improving each time and they seem excited about seeing the progress the entire school makes.

With the Governor’s new mandate set in place as of November 9 the school has had to make some minor adjustments. “First of all, I have to say I’m really proud of our students, and our teachers, and all of our faculty because wearing a masks has not been an issue. Maybe with a few students, we have to remind them to cover their cute little noses but it really hasn’t been an issue,” said Principal Todachinnie. With the new mandate, all students are now required to wear their masks during recess.
