Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so teacher, Stephanie Cha stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss the school’s behavior reward system and Santa’s Workshop.

“So at Creekview what we’ve been doing, as you know, we changed our mascot to the Coyotes and we’ve really utilized that mascot. So what we’re doing is we have created five criteria for the Coyote Tracks. We’re focusing in on respect, perseverance, responsibility, integrity and kindness,” said Cha. These traits are what teachers and administrators look for in students on a daily basis.

When the student demonstrates one of these skills, they are rewarded with a coyote track, the idea is to get one for all five behaviors. “Their goal is to receive all five of those traits and then they’re ultimately rewarded for being an alpha coyote and there are three levels for that. You have bronze, silver and gold and so their ultimate goal is to become the alpha gold coyote,” explained Cha. Each student then is recognized with a certificate and a gift for their accomplishment. The behavior reward program has created such a positive atmosphere for students at the school.

The school’s PTA has established a Santa’s Workshop for students to do their Christmas shopping. “They have provided or bought different items for the students to pick one item to give to one family member. Someone that is in their household that they will be with for Christmas. We really want to teach the students that Christmas isn’t about the getting gifts or receiving, it’s more about the giving and the feeling you get when you give to someone else,” said Cha. Items range from candles, flashlights, bracelets and other small trinkets. The PTA will individually wrap the gifts for students.
