The local Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) is offering an array of online support meetings. Castle Country Radio was able to speak over the telephone with Peer Recovery Coach, Mersades Morgan about what USARA is and what they have to offer individuals in recovery.

“Here in Carbon County, we have two Recovery Coaches, myself and Shirley Wayman. We both get to work full-time with participants. We do one-on-one coaching sessions, as well as facilitate mutual aid support groups. So really our goal is just to support those that are seeking recovery, struggling with substance use disorder, opioid use disorder, and really just bridging that gap and helping break down barriers for people that are just trying to pave their way,” said Morgan. Part of the success of USARA is that those Peer Recovery Coaches are themselves in long-term recovery which gives them insight in relating to those individuals seeking and maintaining sobriety.

The agency just recently moved into the new location that gives them more room to accommodate those in need of their services.  “We are super excited for our new location. We moved to a new location that is bigger so we can accommodate larger groups, that is located at 91 East Main Street. Right now, we are not holding our meetings in-person just due to COVID but we will be holding them in-person as soon as we get the ok to do so. But we are holding all of our meetings virtually right now so that we are still supporting the community,” stated Morgan. To see what virtual meetings are being offered at this time can find a calendar on the USARA Facebook page.

The weekly virtual meetings kick-off on Tuesday with Coffee & Recovery at 9:00 am with an evening AA meeting for women at 6:00 pm. “So we have an outside fellowship bringing in a women’s meeting on Tuesday evenings. Then we offer our Coffee & Recovery meeting virtual Tuesday and Thursday. Then we offer yoga virtual Wednesday, another newcomer meeting which is open. Then Friday we do a Wellness Check, which is just to check-in with people to support them, see if there is anything that they are needing. As much as isolation is encouraged it can be a really scary thing for those that are in recovery or seeking recovery, so we’re really just there to support one another and get through this crazy time,” said Morgan. USARA hopes that in the near future they will be able to host their meetings in person but for now are thankful for technology to allow them to host the meetings virtually.
