The Carbon County Sheriff Office wants to make sure that folks in the community know and are aware of phone scams making the rounds this holiday season. Castle Country Radio took time to speak with Sheriff Jeff Wood over the telephone about these scams.

“Its that time of year when the predators prey on the goodwill of humanity and you just have to be careful right now. You see a lot of the usual scams; you’ll get those phone calls, and they’ll tell you that your social security number is on hold or they’re going to send out someone to arrest you or something like that. Always that a telltale sign of a scam,” said Sheriff Wood. If you receive one of these calls don’t quickly respond to their demands. You have plenty of time to do some fact checking into the phone call, whether that’s with the local law enforcement or your banking institution.

“Banking institutions are up on the latest and greatest of the scams always. Don’t do anything until you ask because there is never a hurry, they’ll try to convince you that there is urgency but there never is. Yea, just be careful with your money. If you are going to donate charities, which I think is great, choose a local charity and choose a charity you know,” explained Sheriff Wood. When you donate to a local charity you know where your money is going and it’s always nice to help out locally when you can.

Some scam phone calls will sometimes tell you that they have someone coming to arrest you, this is not true. “Never, never, never, we would never call you and announce that we are coming to arrest you. I mean that is so unethical and dangerous, I mean we would never put our officers in harms way like that, and we would never do that to you either. We wouldn’t threaten you like that. It would be something that if we were looking for you, you would be met in person and we would deal with it that way,” stated Sheriff Jeff Wood. Never let the caller use scare tactics to try and scam you out of your money.
