The Green River Pirate boys basketball team has had some struggles early on this season, sitting at 3-6 and 14 in the RPI rankings from the Utah High School Activities Association. The Pirates have had bright spots though with Senior Rad Hughes playing lights out averaging 26.2 points per game which lands him at No. 2 in the state across all classes.

On Thursday night, they traveled to Murray to take on the Patriots of Mount Vernon, the Pirates fell short 80-62.

Green River came out in the first quarter taking a 23-15 lead, quarter two was where Mount Vernon did most of their damage outscoring the Pirates 30-5. In the fourth quarter they put scored the Patriots 19-9 but the divide was too much.

Rad Hughes led the way for the Pirates scoring 35, Alex Mendez scored 16 and Payton Romero had 7 in the loss.

For Mount Vernon, Matt Lambson dropped in 37 to lead all scorers while Jake Jorgensen added 21 and Chris Whitfield chipped in with 14.

Up next for the Pirates is a date with Wayne on January 20.
