The Green River Pirates ladies basketball squad traveled to Richfield for the quarterfinals of the 1A State Championships that started on Thursday. The Lady Pirates faced No. 3 Wayne in their quarterfinal match-up falling 56-48. Dropping in to the consolation bracket they played Tabiona on Friday morning but in a close contest they lost to the Tigers 42-30 ending their season.

The Pirates had a strange year by most standards having the last two weeks of their season wiped out by a quarantine order. In fact the first round game they played against Escalante on February 27 was the first time they took to the court in almost a month. They were definitely ready taking Escalante to task 46-33.

On Thursday night they faced the Wayne Badgers in the last game of the day. The Badgers punched their ticket to Richfield by taking apart the Pinnacle Panthers on February 27, 75-10. The Pirates would keep this one close however, ending the first quarter down by one. Wayne would push their lead to 10 at the half, Green River was down by nine after three and Wayne would finish out the contest 56-48.

Leading the way for Green River was Taylnn Lovato with 19 points. Abigail Irwin added 11 and Megan Vollmer dropped in nine. The loss would drop the Pirates in to the lower bracket with the best possible finish being 5th.

After losing to Wayne Thursday night, the Pirates would have to be back on the floor at 10:30 on Friday morning to face the Tabiona Tigers. The two teams had faced each other three time this season with the Tigers taking the season series 2-1. The last meeting was a 69-44 win for Green River at home on January 23.

The game started out very close in fact the Pirates took a two point lead in to the locker room at 18-16. Tabiona came out in the third quarter holding Green River to just four points, and eight points in the final quarter. Down with four minutes to play the Pirates were forced to play the foul game and the Tigers couldn’t miss their free throws down the stretch.

The season will now come to a close for Green River and as they look to next season they will lose five seniors to graduation and hope to play a full season in 2021-2022.
