Castle Country Radio Stations picks a non-profit organization in the community to highlight each month as their Charity of the Month and for the month of April Carbon Caring for Kids was chosen. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Marcie Loveless to talk all things Carbon Caring for Kids.

The idea came to two mothers, Loveless and Tiffany Noyes about four or five years ago when a school counselor mentioned that there were kids in her school that for some reason or another are not getting food to eat consistently when they are not in school. “We decided we wanted to just text a whole bunch of people and after I text forty people in my phone, within two hours I had everything I needed for 60 kids for a whole Thanksgiving week break. After that we had leftovers and we said well this problem isn’t going to go away let’s just keep doing this as long as the community donates the food and helps to provide food for these kids let’s just keep doing it. We created the Facebook group page and we’re over 1,000 members now, four or five years later, we’re still up to 145 kids feeding them every single weekend,” stated Loveless.

The families and/or children are identified through the help of the schools. The names are anonymous to the organizers only school counselors are aware of who the students are. “Carbon Caring for Kids we do not know who these kits go to. We simply get a number from each school. So the counselors who work with these kids on a daily basis, they kind of see their needs, they are the ones that decide who gets these kits and where that need is and then they give us a number and we make that number of kits for that school,” said Loveless. Food items for the kits are gathered all week long and donated by individuals, families, and merchants.

This is a volunteer-based organization from the donations, to preparation of kits, to distribution of kits. “If you are wanting to pack kits, and coming to pack all of these 145 kits the month of May we do have open spots if people want to sign up on our Facebook page, Carbon Caring for Kids, you can message me on there and let me know if there’s a Tuesday in the month of May that you would like to come pack those kits,” explained Loveless. If you would like to know what food items are needed for the kits you can also visit the Facebook page to find that information.
