The Carbon County Family Support Center and Children Justice Center has been campaigning this month for National Child Abuse Prevention Month and they are preparing for Utah’s Family Month in May. Director, Shelley Wright took time to come into the Castle Country Radio Station to share details.

Many folks may not know about the services the Carbon County Family Support Center and Children Justice Center offer so Wright explains, “The Children’s Justice Center focuses on providing services to families where a child may have been abused or neglected. So we involve law enforcement and Child Protective Services and we provide a team around that family to help coordinate the investigation and coordinate other services such as mental health therapy, and any kind of medical exams that need to take place.” The Carbon County Family Support Center focuses on prevention of child abuse. They provide crisis care for families in need, provide various parenting classes, they make home visits, to help strengthen the family.

April is designated as National Child Abuse Prevention month and the CJC has been blowing up their Facebook with important information for parents and families. “What we’re doing at the center is we’re trying to encourage families to spend some more family time, do something where it really involves your children. We posted a calendar of different events and ideas each day of the month in April. So we are encouraging the community to send us pictures to our Facebook and Instagram page so join in the fun,” said Wright. Officials from the Children Justice Center have gone around and planted pinwheel gardens on Main Street near the Peace Garden and up at the center to represent strengthen and how it is to be a child again. It’s Utah Family Month beginning Mother’s Day, May 9 running through to Father’s Day, June 20. “The idea is to just encourage families going out and spending time together. Families are our strength and we need to highlight that in our communities. So what we do at the center is we choose a day between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we invite the community to come out and fly kites with your children. In the past we’ve provided a small meal, I don’t know what we are going to do this year but we are going to have an event and it will have to do with flying kites,” explained Wright. More details of the kite flying event will come at a later time.
