This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary who have been busy working on end of the year testing, constructing a school garden and preparing for field trips. Castle Country Radio was able to speak over the telephone with Principal, Connie Todachinnie who shared all the details with listeners.

“So our fifth grade already started their testing last week actually because fifth grade has to take four assessments for the end of the year. So they did their writing last week, and then this week they’re doing their English Language Arts, and then they’ve got Math and Science. Fourth grade and third grade started today. Fourth grade only has three tests and third grade only has two,” explained Principal Todachinnie. Kindergarten, first and second graders will begin their testing next week, which their testing is done more on a one-on-one basis. The teachers appreciate parents making sure their students get plenty of rest the night before and arrive to school on time during the testing procedures.

Several school officials have prepared a portion of their school yard for a school garden. “We’re actually going to bring in a couple of sheep and let them finish cleaning it up. Then we’re going to bring in dirt or top soil and manure and we have a volunteer that is going to come till that all in. We actually started our plants a couple of weeks ago. So we’ve got plants growing all over the place, in classrooms, little seedlings for beets, radishes, carrots, watermelon and squash – you name it, we got it and we are really, really excited,” stated Principal Todachinnie. The school’s sprinkling system already waters that section of the yard so watering the garden will not be a problem. The school opened up the garden to the community who in turn made several donations towards the garden. The area will be fenced off in order to keep wildlife out of the plants.

The entire school is looking forward to going on a field trip to Goblin Valley at the end of the month. “On that Friday, the 30th of April we are going to Goblin Valley for a school-wide field trip. It will be fun; the kids won’t have to wear their masks because we’ll be outside. The only time they will have to wear them is when they’re congregating or working in a group but we’re really excited about that. It’s just going to be an exploratory day where the kids just get to go outside and have a ton of fun,” said Principal Todachinnie. More details and information on the Goblin Valley field trip will be sent home with students.
