The Lady Dinos continued play in the 3A State Championships on Friday in Spanish Fork. After wins Thursday against Providence Hall and North Sanpete, the Dinos moved on to face No. 2 South Summit in their opening game on Friday afternoon.

Carbon opened up the first inning putting four runs on the board and carried that momentum into the second when Makayla Scovill stepped up to the plate and took one deep over the right field fence bringing home Molly Horsley. Amya Prettyman would single later in the inning driving in one more run pushing the Dino lead to 7-1.

South Summit thought they had something going in the fifth inning putting three runs on the board, but the Carbon defense held strong putting an end to South Summit’s season.

The Dinos collected 17 hits in the win.  Scovill went 3-of-5 with three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs. Lyndsey Madrigal went 3-of-3  with a home run, scoring three runs and driving in one.

On the mound Haven Byerly got the complete game and the win for the Dinos. Byerly gave up four runs (three earned) on six hit and struck out three.

The win over South Summit meant that Carbon would face Grand for the second time in two days and fourth time all season. The Dinos were no doubt looking to end Grand’s season after Thursday’s loss.

The game with Grand was a battle. Early on it looked like Carbon was going to walk away with it when Stevie Oman tripled to right bringing home Byerly pushing the score to 5-0.

Grand fought right back, scoring six runs in the next two innings, tying the score at 6-6.

When it looked like we were headed for extra innings, Scovill came up to the plate and singled to left allowing Graycie Hansen to come home and score, breaking the tie and sending Grand home.

Scovill led the Dinos with three hits, adding one run and driving in another. Horsley, Byerly and Stevie Oman all had two hits in the win for the Dinos.

Brooke Moosman got the start going 4 and 2/3 innings. She gave up six earned runs on five hits. Byerly came in taking the win, going 2 and 1/3 allowing one hit and no runs, and struck out seven.

The Dinos will now play Manti Saturday morning at 10. Carbon played Manti earlier this season, falling in a closely fought 9-8 battle.

A win puts Carbon in the championship final against Grantsville at 12:15.  If they win game one they will have to beat them one more time since Grantsville has made it to the final round without a loss.
