Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss the school’s reading levels, field trips and reward system.

Like most schools in the district, Creekview has been working hard on improving reading levels all year long. “The middle of the year we were you know 30 percent of our students on reading level and things. It’s looking like right now we’re going to be around 58 percent of our students will be on end of year reading level, compared to last year it was 37 percent in the pandemic year.  So we feel we have made some major gains in one year and being able to make up for some of that loss of the two month of instruction last year. We’re excited to see what’s coming in and the kids are excited and that’s what its about,” stated Principal Palmer. The students have worked really hard throughout the year with their reading and it shows through the end of the year numbers.

Now that the end of the school year is nearing, it means its time for many grades to go on field trips. “So some of the grades are going out to Nine Mile, some are going down to Buckhorn Wash down on the Swell. Some of our first grade just went to a local farm around here and they just taught them some things. But I think it’s actually kind of cool because we’ve been able to highlight what is right here in our backyard, which I think sometimes we take for granted we have so much here,” said Principal Palmer. Students will be bringing home permission slips and details of their upcoming field trips they plan to go on.

The school implemented a new behavioral reward system and it seems to have worked really well. “We created a new plan to recognize kids for good behavior. We call our big award the Alpha Award, you know referring to the leader of the pack kind of thing. So we have five areas that we ask kids to focus on and meet expectations, to be respectful, to persevere, to be responsible, to be kind and have integrity. We feel like those five things, if kids are doing those things we are going to be in pretty good shape,” stated Principal Palmer. The school will recognize 170 students at the end of the school year. Those students that took tops honors will have an opportunity to enjoy lunch with the Principal.
