Ryan Maughan is the new Superintendent at the Emery County School District and he started his duties on July 1. Castle Country Radio was able to speak over the telephone with Superintendent Maughan to discuss what the focus is for the upcoming school year.

“I think the focus is student opportunities and that’s opportunities within education and life outcomes. Focus for me within that is instructional improvement, to make sure that we’re meeting the needs of students for their education, literacy being primary and, in all aspects, as well as in supporting students with the barriers that affect education, so with a priority with social and emotionally learning and how we meet the needs of students so they can be successful in education,” said Superintendent Maughan. He feels that with the current educators and administrators both working towards the goal of providing the best education to the Emery County students will be possible this year.

School officials stated they didn’t see much of decline in the way instruction was given to students last year due to the COVID pandemic. “So I think with COVID you saw the true character of people and the educators there was just a willingness to do what every they could to provide an opportunity for students and that was extremely meaningful. So yea, when you see that and the performance through those hard situations, yea, you’re very comfortable moving forward realizing that whatever is thrown at you we’re going to have people with genuine care for children and the community and they are going to do what every they can to allow that child to be successful,” stated Superintendent Maughan.

There are some huge constructions projects taking place within the district. “There’s a lot going on. We’re going to be providing meaningful facilities for student education and a great piece for the community and there are some barriers that come with it – how do we meet the needs; how do we adjust classrooms. Our administrators and our teachers very flexible and very adaptable. We’re going to see some great buildings and see a lot of adaptability for students to receive education along the way,” said Superintendent Maughan. There is currently construction taking place at Emery High School as well as at Ferron Elementary.  The administration appreciates the community support with both projects.
