The Carbon School District took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to visit with fourth-grade teachers Jared Chiara and Janel Parry about the school reward system and Utah History.

The school has a reward system that they offer to encourage students. “We decided that we need to reward our students that are doing a good job, too often we get busy dealing with the kids that cause trouble and we decided we needed to reward those kids that are working so hard, so we got a few things that we do. In our building, building-wide we’ve got Bull Pride cards going on and a Toro Ticket system. The Bull Pride cards are a postcard that shows up in the mail,” stated Mr. Chiara. Teachers will send a Bull Pride card to the student’s home to show the student that they have been recognized for their good behavior and/or academics.

The Toro Ticket system is designed to identify a few students throughout the day. “We also do a thing called Toro Tickets, last year it was Bull Horns and we’ve changed it to Toro Tickets, it matches our new school mission statement. The Toro Tickets we’ll look for two or three kids during the day that have been exceptional and we go ahead and give them a Toro Ticket at the end of the day. They get a copy to take home and one goes down to the office so they can be put in for a school-wide drawing. Before they leave our room, they get a little prize, like a piece of candy or something from our jar that they can take home with them. Just because they need to know every day that they’ve been awesome and made our class better,” stated Mr. Chiara. The students along with the faculty/staff love the reward system and how it inspires good behavior and great success in academics.

The entire fourth grade is learning about all things Utah History this year. “We are focusing on Utah History this month for our social studies core and that’s kind of fun because we get to talk about all the big events in history in Utah. We talk about the Promontory Point, the meeting of the railroads, we talk about mountain men and the trappers. So as part of that we will have a Mountain Man Rendezvous in May this is district-wide. Where all the fourth graders are invited to come and they get to see Indian teepees, they get to see mountain man food and cooking, and get to taste it. They get to see things that mountain men and trappers would have done. So they really enjoy this in May,” stated Mrs. Parry. This is a great event to host for the students as they finish up their Utah History studies for the year.
