The Green River Pirate boy’s basketball team is already two games deep into the young 2021-2022 season. The Pirates ended last year 3-11 losing in the opening round of the playoffs to Milford. The season began with back-to-back losses to Gunnison Valley 61-27 and Wayne 62-36.

The Pirates lost six players to graduation, but last years team had quite a few underclassmen that played on varsity and could reap dividends this season.

In the game with Gunnison Valley the Pirates were led by Luis Hernandez with 11 and Hoyt Hunt added nine. Both players are sophomores on this years squad.

The game with Wayne was really over in quarter on when Green River was outscored 20-4 . The Pirates would comeback in the second quarter to cut the Wayne lead to 35-21.

The third quarter was another problem for the Pirates scoring just five points and then in fourth they were able to put up 10 more but that would put an end to it for Green River.

This time out it was Raul Mendoza who would lead the Pirates with 13 while Hernandez added 10.

Green River will be back on the road on Tuesday as they will travel to Tabiona to face the Tigers. Last season in January these two teams met up in Green River with Tabiona taking the win.

The Pirates will finally get a home game on Wednesday Dec 8 when Mount Vernon comes to town. Time for this game is set for 6 p.m..
