John Smith Huefner, age 89, passed away at home January 15, 2022, of natural causes. He is the son of John Huefner and Helen Smith.

He lived a full and productive life. He went to University of Utah and majored in military science, graduating in 1953. He served active duty in the Army from 1953-1955 in Darmstadt Germany in the 7th Artillery Battalion. On returning to Salt Lake City, he met and married Louise Crandall in 1956. They had seven children. He obtained a degree in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1959. He worked professionally as an engineer in Long Beach, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, and Price, UT. John and Louise divorced in 1973. He married Cleo King Merritt in 1973. They had one child. He was passionate about scouting and was awarded a Silver Beaver by Utah’s Boys Scout Association for his many years of service.  He also loved ice cream and sailing catamarans. After retirement John and Cleo served missions in the Rostov Na Danu, Russia Mission and the Manchester, New Hampshire Mission.

He is survived by his wife Cleo; his children, Jonathan (Kim), Rebecca Chapman (Matt), William (Jami), Joseph (Marie), Catherine LaPorte (Michael), and Howard; stepchildren Linda Merritt (Allan Switalski), Lindsey Merritt (Jill), Nolan Merritt (Bonnie); and many Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sons Andrew and Nathan.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Price Stake building, 150 South 500 East, Price, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday, January 21, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Fausett Mortuary, 680 East 100 South, Price, Utah, and Saturday morning from 10:00 to 10:45 AM prior to services. Interment will be in the Price City Cemetery.
