The Spartan wrestling season is coming to an end, so every match counts before they head to the Divisional Tournament Feb. 4 & 5 at the Sevier Valley Center. Saturday they headed to Roosevelt to face Union High School. The Spartans dominated the Cougars 57-19 and now get ready for Senior Night on Tuesday.

Coach Kirk Christiansen joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports recently and said that even though the season is almost over, he’s constantly evaluating wrestlers.

“We really want to assess our technique and our stamina and adjust practice accordingly. These matches really give us the opportunity to focus on those two things and we’re looking forward to the post season. My team is fit and strong and fast, and they’re wrestling really good, we’re super excited about it.”

In the matches with Union, Emery lost just three. One by pin, one by decision and the final by forfeit.

Up next for the Spartan wrestlers is Senior Night against Maple Mountain, a match that Christiansen says they sought out.

“Maple Mountain is a powerhouse in the state of Utah, and we we’re tickled for them to call us this fall and request a duel with us. That just tells you right there what this team has been able to accomplish, they’re earning respect everywhere they go.”

Tomorrow night at the Spartan Center they will honor the 10 seniors on this year’s squad. There will also be some alumni matches of teams past ready to take to the mat again.
