Carbon softball began their run towards a state title on Saturday when they welcomed the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle to Price for the opening round of the 3A State Softball Championships.  This was the second time these two had met up this season and much like the first Carbon took care of business in three innings 25-0.

Behind Tenley Madsen and Danica Adams on the mound, who combined for the one hit shutout while striking out seven on the defensive side and Gianna Bruno who ended the day 1-2 with a grand slam home run, five RBI’s and scoring a run herself that was just part of the potent Dino offense.

Going back to March, when the Dinos faced Juan Diego for the first time this season, coincidentally the game also ended in three innings as Carbon came away with the 17-0 victory.

Makayla Scovill who had a day, going 3-3 with four RBI’s, three hits and three runs, got things going for the Dinos with a double to center which led to Mollie Horsley and Gabrielle Vasquez coming home. With the score 7-0 Bruno stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and sent one over the wall in left field, driving in Brielle Sandoval, Horsley and Vasquez, moving the score to 11-0. The scoring for the first inning ended when Haven Byerly would ground out to the pitcher bringing home Adri Abeyta and pushing the score to 13-0 at the end of one.

After holding Juan Diego scoreless in the top of the second inning, Carbon would get started when Bruno was intentionally walked bringing in Sandoval. Scovill was the next batter up and her single to center drove home Horsley and Vasquez. Madsen came to the plate next, with a line drive to left and after one of Juan Diego’s eight errors, Madsen found herself on second and Scovill would score.  With two out, Annie McGinnis entered the game for Bruno and wasted no time sending a double to center field that allowed Reese Ardohain and Sandoval to score making it 22-0. Another error brought in Gracee Vasquez and McGinnis. Abeyta put the final run on the board off of a Jenna Richards single. Carbon held Juan Diego to three-up and three-down in the third ending the game 25-0.

Up next for the Dinos is a meeting with Region 12 foe Grand at 10:00 in Spanish Fork on Thursday.  This will actually be the fourth time these two teams have faced each other this season. The first meeting was at a tournament in St. George and the Dinos came away with an 11-1 win. In their first region meeting on April 18, the Lady Dinos claimed a 17-1 win and then just two days later Grand would get the better of Carbon 4-2.

A win would assure the Dinos a spot in the quarterfinals on Friday. If the lose they will fall into the one-loss bracket and will have to fight their way back to the Championship Game on Saturday.
