The Emery Lady Spartans coming off their 15-0 opening round dismantling of Ogden last Saturday, traveled to Spanish Fork Thursday to face No. 4 South Summit. Emery jumped out to an 11-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, when South Summit found their offense putting up six runs in the inning and winning the game 12-11.

Emery entered the contest as the No. 5 seed. A win against South Summit could set up a contest with Carbon on Friday, and a loss would put them in the one loss bracket and a date with Union on Thursday.

The game started out rather quietly with South Summit putting up single runs in both the second and third innings. Both teams were quiet in the fourth and then Emery got it going in the fifth inning when Taija Olsen stepped up to the plate with two on and sent a single to second base, Olsen would advance to second on the throw and Aspen Taylor and Tylee Norton would both score. Madisyn Childs came up to the plate sending a line drive to left bringing home Morgan Luke and Olsen, the inning would come to an end when Madi Bunnell would collect a walk bringing in  Kali Jensen, putting the Lady Spartans up 5-2.

South Summit would take the lead 6-5  going into the top of the fifth, the Spartans would quickly go to work tying the game at six and kept pushing through the inning putting them back up 8-6. South Summit came out in the bottom of the inning going three-up and three-down, and making for a interesting seventh.

With one out and two strikes with two on, Cambrie Jensen sent one over the center field fence, bringing Taylor and Norton home and putting the Spartans up 11-6.

South Summit brought the offense in the bottom half of the inning tying the game up at 11 with a home run from the bat of Taya Rose. Mariah Bowen hit a ground ball getting to second base on an error and Rose, who came back in the game as a courtesy runner, scored giving South Summit the one run win, 12-11.

Childs started the game on the mound going 4.1 innings giving up six earned on seven hits striking out one. Cambrie Jensen put in two innings of work giving up five earned on six hits and striking out two, taking the loss.

Childs and Olsen collected three RBI’s and Cambrie Jensen had four RBI’s, going 2-4 from the plate and scoring a run.

The Lady Spartans will now face Union around 6 p.m., all games were pushed back because of a late start due to the weather. Emery played Union once already this season at the Payson Tournament in early April taking a 9-1 win.
