Another successful school year has come to an end for Carbon School District and throughout the year a weekly update has been shared on Castle Country Radio. This was an opportunity for school officials to inform the public of their activities and events that were taking place at their schools. The updates were started with Superintendent Mika Salas welcoming students back to school in August so it’s only fitting that she returned to the radio station to close out the updates as well.

“It really has been a great year. We’ve been so excited to see the kids come back in a regular setting, as regular as anyone can expect after our weird couple of years with COVID and everything. It’s been fantastic! The kids just dive in, they want to be together, they want to be a part of activities, they want to contribute, they want to be successful, and it’s just been fun to watch,” said Superintendent Salas. Overall, she has been very pleased with how the 2021-2022 academic school year has gone for all schools in the district.

The high school recently finished up their Sterling Scholar competition and were ecstatic over the results. “Everybody placed! They either won their category or took runner-up and that has never happened before. It was just an exciting event, we were in Monticello at Monticello High School for the awards ceremony, and it was just the Carbon show,” stated Superintendent Salas. She was so proud of all the Carbon High School students that competed in the competition this year.

There has been lots of construction taking place over the school year at both Helper Middle School and Carbon High School. The high school is so close to being completed and the middle school has a bit to go. “The construction has been a challenge but it is wonderful. When you walk in Carbon High and you see the new area and the remodeled areas, and it just flows together really well its open and its just so welcoming for the kids. We’re just about there,” said Superintendent Salas. The school district plans on hosting Open Houses at each of the schools sometime next year so that residents in Carbon can come visit the new additions.

As for next school year, many educators and administrators are already preparing for the 2022-2023 academic school year. “We’re getting ready for a big push the week after school gets out with our school leaderships teams, they write their school improvement plans for the following year. That’s going strong that week after school. Then I have nine pages of notes for my summer projects to do so we’ll start knocking those out. But looking into next year, we’ll celebrate the minimal construction, we’ll celebrate our wonderful kids coming back, our wonderful staff and we just love school. We want the kids there, we love having them there,” stated Superintendent Salas. The Carbon School District would like to wish all of their students, faculty and staff a safe and wonderful summer vacation.
