Our husband, father, grandad, uncle and friend, Bert William (Bill) Fryer joined family members who have been waiting for him on the other side of the veil early in the morning of May 20, 2022 at his home in Wellington, Utah while surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Bert was born October 28, 1941 in Preston, Idaho to Russell William Fryer and Cecil Mae Wilcox Fryer.  Bert was being blessed and given a name on December 7, 1941 as Pearl Harbor was being bombed.  He attended elementary and junior high school in Dragerton, Utah; and Carbon High School in Price, Utah.

Bert joined the United States Navy (Uncle Sam’s Canoe Club as he called it) in November 1958 shortly after his 17th birthday.  He served in the Cuban Missile Crisis, three tours of duty in Vietnam and ended his 20-year career in the Navy as a recruiter for three years in Reno, Nevada.

On March 18, 1971, Bert met Helen Cook on a blind date while home on leave.  They were married six days later on March 24, 1971 in Ely, Nevada.  The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on May 10, 1988.  They recently celebrated their 51st anniversary. (AND THEY SAID IT WOULDN’T LAST!!!)

After Bert retired from the Navy the family returned to Carbon County where they made their home in Wellington.  Bert went to work at Plateau Mine in October of 1978.  He worked there until he sustained a work-related injury in 1986 and was medically disabled.

Bert enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family and extended family.  He had a dry sense of humor, loved Dad jokes and his children learned to never walk around a corner without looking first because he loved to jump out and scare (booger) them.  Bert was a voracious reader, often reading 3-4 books simultaneously.  He passed on this love of books and reading to his daughters (sons not so much).

Bert is survived by his wife Helen, daughters, Cynthia S. Fryer, Ogden, Utah, Heather E. Fryer, Wellington; grandchildren, Coltin William Fryer, Hooper, Utah, Chandon Jace Montgomery, US Army Fort Wainwright, Alaska and HarleyJoel Elizabeth Smith, Halfway, Oregon; special daughters, Crisy Anderson Middleton and Jennifer Starrett, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother, David R Fryer, East Carbon, Utah; many nieces, nephews and 33 foster children.

Preceded in death by his parents, daughter, JoLynn Milano; sons, Bert W. Fryer, Jr., and Joel Alan Fryer; granddaughter, Cheylee Montgomery; “Special Bud” Spencer Roundy (Hey Spence!) and his in-laws Mervin and Betty Cook.

The family would like to thank Symbii Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Bert, especially Rick Stockburger and Kara Heath.  We couldn’t have managed without you.

Funeral service, Thursday, May 26, 2022, 12:00 noon at the Wellington First Ward Chapel (50 North 100 East).  Family will receive friends at the church Thursday morning from 11:00-11:45 a.m. prior to service.  Burial will be in the Wellington City Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of Bert online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
